I photographed Catherine and Bryan’s first Christmas together as a newly wed couple. This is the final image photographed in front of their favorite fireplace. I’d like to share my mishaps and thought process on how I came up with the final image to present for their holiday card.
- Be watchful for the moments that happen after the shoot! I caught this moment just as I was removing the camera from the tripod. I felt this candid moment had all the right emotions for a holiday card so I decided to tweak it it in photoshop.
- I straightened the image, adjusted the white balance and cropped it in to a 5×7.
- I sharpened the image and added a holiday banner to the top. I thought the lady in the painting above their heads was distracting with her hands raised. Alternatively, I could have added the banner to the bottom to allow the art in the photograph to highlight the couple…It could have appeared that the lady in the painting was raising her hands in praise for the happy newly weds. Nevertheless, I decided to make my subjects the focus, as I typically like to do.
- I removed the electrical cord hanging against the fireplace because I thought it was distracting.
- I created an HDR look to give it that Norman Rockwell painting look. Fitting for a holiday card and a pose like this.
- I always like to give my clients some images in black and white. I thought that this finish would give it a 50’s classic feel.
